Copper and Half-Round Gutters in Orlando

How much more does copper gutter cost than aluminum?

A large multiple, not a small premium, and the labour is higher too because copper joints are soldered rather than sealed. The realistic framing is that copper is an architectural decision on a house where the roofline is part of the design, not a value upgrade that pays back. Aluminum half-round gets most of the visual result for a fraction of the material cost.

Does copper gutter make sense in Florida?

It performs well; the questions are cost and appearance. Copper is not affected by the UV that eventually dulls painted finishes, and it does not need repainting. The patina timeline is faster in a humid climate than a dry one, so the bright-to-brown transition happens sooner here. Whether that is a feature depends entirely on what you want the house to look like in year three.

Is half-round gutter worse at handling water than K-style?

For a given nominal size, half-round holds less water than K-style, because K-style is essentially a rectangle with a decorative front and the semicircle is not. That means a 6-inch half-round is not equivalent to a 6-inch K-style, and sizing needs to account for it. On a high-intensity-rainfall roofline like Orlando, the practical effect is that half-round runs often want to go a size up or gain an extra outlet.

Will copper runoff stain the driveway?

In the early years it can. Fresh copper sheds a small amount of copper carbonate in runoff, which discolours light concrete, limestone, and pale render below the discharge point. It slows markedly once the patina sets. Where there is pale hardscape directly under a downspout, routing the discharge is worth thinking about at install rather than after the first rainy season.

Can copper gutter be fitted to a house with aluminum flashing?

Not in direct contact. Copper and aluminum in contact with water between them set up galvanic corrosion, and the aluminum is the metal that suffers. Where the two must meet, an isolating detail or a change of the adjacent flashing material is the standard approach, and it is the kind of thing a sheet metal contractor works out at the measure.
