Gutter questions, answered for Orlando
Twenty-five of them, grouped by what you are trying to work out. The symptoms section is the one to start with if something is going wrong and you do not yet know what to call it.
Sizing and capacity
Is 5-inch gutter big enough for an Orlando house?
For a small porch run or a simple hip roof with modest planes, yes. For a large single-plane roof, a long valley emptying into a short run, or a steep pitch that throws water fast, frequently not. The reason is rainfall intensity: NOAA Atlas 14 puts the one-hour, ten-year depth for downtown Orlando at 2.91 inches, roughly three times the one-inch-per-hour rate the standard sizing tables are published against.
What decides whether a run needs 6-inch instead of 5-inch?
The roof area draining into it and how fast the water arrives, not the size of the house. Two houses of identical square footage can want different answers if one has a simple hip roof spreading the load across four runs and the other funnels most of the roof into two. Measuring the roof planes is the whole job.
Does upsizing the gutter fix an overflow on its own?
Not always, and often not. If the trough is fine but there is only one outlet at the end of a forty-foot run, the water builds depth as it travels and spills over the front edge before it ever reaches the downspout. Adding an outlet in the middle can fix that for a fraction of the cost of a full upsize.
What is the difference between 2x3 and 3x4 downspout?
Roughly double the throat area, which is a bigger jump than the numbers look. It matters for capacity, and it matters for clogging, because debris that bridges across a 2x3 outlet often passes a 3x4. On 6-inch trough, 3x4 is the normal pairing.
How many downspouts should a run have?
Set by the roof area feeding it and the length of the run rather than by fixed spacing. Long runs need more because of the depth-building problem. Valleys and dormers that dump concentrated flow into one spot usually justify an outlet at that point specifically.
Is half-round gutter the same capacity as K-style?
No. A semicircle encloses less area than the near-rectangular K-style section at the same nominal width, so a 6-inch half-round carries less than a 6-inch K-style. On a high-intensity-rainfall roofline that difference is worth designing around, usually with an extra outlet or a size up.
Symptoms and what causes them
Water sheets off the front edge in a storm even though the gutter is clean.
That is capacity or flow path, not debris. Usual causes: trough too small for the roof area, too few outlets for the length of the run, an outlet nowhere near where a valley dumps, or a partial blockage lower down in the downspout. In Orlando the first two are common because sizing here is frequently done by habit rather than by roof area.
Water runs down behind the gutter onto the fascia.
Almost always a roof-edge detail rather than a gutter fault. Where drip edge is missing or the shingle overhang is short, water follows the underside of the roof edge by surface tension and lands behind the trough. The repair is drip edge or a gutter apron at the roof edge. Sealing the back of the gutter does not address the mechanism.
One corner drips constantly after rain.
A failed mitre seal. Sealant behind a corner joint goes brittle over years and opens up. It is repairable: the joint gets cut open, cleaned back to bare metal, and resealed. A bead of caulk smeared over the outside of a dirty joint is the version that fails again in months.
The middle of a run has started to sag.
A hanger has let go, and the sections either side took the load. If the fascia behind it is sound the run can be pulled back to slope and rehung on new hidden hangers. If the fascia has gone soft, the board is the actual repair and the gutter has to come off to get at it.
There is a channel washed into the flower bed under a downspout.
The discharge is concentrated and landing on bare soil. Central Florida sand moves easily under a roof plane worth of water. An extension carrying it further out, a splash block on gravel, or buried pipe to a pop-up emitter all solve it, at increasing cost and decreasing visibility.
A downspout has come apart at an elbow.
The crimped joint was never fastened, or a strap has failed and the weight of water pulled it open. Refastening and strapping properly is a small repair. Left alone it puts the whole run of water against the wall at that point.
The gutter is full of small stiff curled leaves in April.
Live oak. It is semi-deciduous, holding leaves through winter and pushing the old ones off as new growth comes in, typically March into early May, with catkins in the same window. That is why Central Florida gutters fill on a spring cycle rather than the autumn one national advice assumes.
Guards, cleaning and maintenance
How often do Orlando gutters need clearing?
Under mature oak, twice a year is the practical baseline: once in late spring after the leaf drop and before the wet season, once in late autumn. On lots with little overhang, annually is usually enough. Pine changes it, because needles arrive year round rather than in a season.
Do gutter guards work under a live oak canopy?
Some designs do. Live oak leaves are small and stiff, so they pass straight through coarse screen. Fine micro-mesh keeps them out but collects a surface film of pollen and catkin litter in spring that wants rinsing. The honest outcome under mature oak is a system checked once or twice a year rather than cleared four times.
Can a gutter guard make overflow worse?
Reverse-curve and solid-cover designs can, because they rely on water clinging to a curved surface and turning into the trough. In a very high-intensity burst the water can carry straight past the curve. Orlando delivers those bursts; the five-minute, ten-year depth here is about 0.73 inches. Open-mesh and perforated designs do not have this failure mode.
Is it worth guarding a gutter that already overflows?
Not as the first move. If a run overflows when it is completely clear, the problem is capacity, and covering it does nothing for capacity. Sizing first, guarding second, gets a system that works.
Is flushing with a hose the same as cleaning?
No. Wet oak litter compacts into a mat that a hose pushes along the trough and packs harder against the outlet. Hand clearing removes it; the flush afterwards is the test that it drains, not the clean itself.
What gets damaged when a gutter stays blocked?
The fascia first, because water backing over the rear of the trough sits against the board. Then the soffit, then whatever is under the overflow point: trim, siding, beds, and the soil against the slab. The gutter itself usually outlasts all of it, which is why a blocked system looks fine from the ground.
Materials, cost and process
What does seamless gutter cost in Orlando?
It is priced by the linear foot with corners, outlets, downspouts, and any fascia repair added on. 5-inch aluminum sits below 6-inch, two-storey costs more than single-storey, and copper or half-round is a separate bracket. How long does an installation take?
A single-storey house with a straightforward roofline is usually one day, tear-off through cleanup. Two-storey work, complex geometry with many corners, or a job that uncovers rotten fascia goes into a second day. Gutter is formed on the truck at the property, so ladder work sets the pace.
What is seamless gutter made of?
Almost always aluminum coil, most commonly in .027 and .032 gauge, formed to shape by a roll former at the house. Heavier gauge holds shape better under ladder contact and debris load. Copper and galvanised steel exist and are specified for appearance or longevity rather than for price.
Is copper gutter worth it in Florida?
It performs well and never needs repainting, but it costs a large multiple of aluminum and the joints are soldered rather than sealed, so labour is higher too. It is an architectural decision on a house where the roofline is part of the design. Aluminum half-round gets most of the look for a fraction of the material cost.
Do I need a permit for gutter work in Orlando?
Requirements differ between the City of Orlando, unincorporated Orange County, and each of the surrounding cities and counties, and they change. The reliable answer for a specific address comes from that jurisdiction building department, and a contractor working in the area routinely will know the current position. Anything that grows into structural fascia or soffit repair is more likely to involve permitting than plain gutter replacement.
Does gutter need Florida product approval like windows and roofing do?
Florida product approval covers eight specific categories: panel walls, exterior doors, roofing, skylights, windows, shutters, structural components, and impact protective systems. Gutter is not one of them. Note also that Orange County is not in the High Velocity Hurricane Zone, which applies only to Miami-Dade and Broward.
Should gutters go on before or after a new roof?
After, where the timing allows. Drip edge is installed as part of the roof, and roofers frequently take gutter off or work around it. Hanging new gutter against fresh drip edge and sound fascia is the clean sequence. Doing it the other way round risks the new run getting knocked about.
